India's NDTV sues Nielsen in US over false ratings data

New Delhi Television (NDTV) has sued the Nielsen Company, saying its Indian joint venture provided 'false, fabricated and manipulated data' on TV ratings for almost a decade. NDTV says the manipulated data cost it nearly a billion dollars in advertising revenue and is suing for several billion dollars in damages. The suit was filed in the New York State Supreme Court against Nielsen, its Indian joint venture TAM Media Research, and Kantar Media Research, that owns a 50 percent stake in the Indian business. NDTV, best known for its 24-hour English language news station, accuses employees of TAM of manipulating ratings in exchange for kickbacks from other TV networks.
Five terror bomb blasts rock Pune city

Within hours of Sushilkumar Shinde taking over as Home Minister, coordinated serial terror blasts rocked Pune, underlining the challenges facing Shinde in his new post. The first bomb went off near an awards ceremony venue that Shinde was to attend but cancelled because of his new appointment. Two people were injured in the blasts that did no damage to property and police say injuries were few because the bombs were of very low intensity. The explosives were placed a few meters apart. The second device went off in a dustbin outside a McDonald's outlet, the third outside a Bank branch and the fourth near a flyover. Pune has long been a hub for the Indian Mujahideen and men and material for attacks in Hyderabad and other places have been sourced from Pune.
45 burned to death on Chennai bound train

At least 45 people burned to death and over 25 were injured when a fire broke out in a coach of the Delhi-Chennai Tamil Nadu Express near Nellore. Railway Minister Mukul Roy indicated that there could have been a blast, so did the divisional railway manager. Roy did not confirm the fire was sabotage but said there was talk about a short circuit and some inflammable substance carried by a passenger. The toll could rise to 35 as some of the bodies are still to be recovered from the charred compartment. The minister has announced an ex gratia payment of Rs.5 lakhs for each of the next of kin of those killed in the mishap and one dependent from the family of those killed will be provided a job. Rs.1 lakh will be paid for those grievously injured and Rs.25,000 for those who suffered simple injuries.
Olympics : Gagan Narang bags bronze in men's 10m air rifle

Marksman Gagan Narang shot his way to the men's 10 m air rifle bronze medal. He held his nerve to stave off Chinese rival Wang To, behind gold medal winner Moldoveanu of Romania and Italy's Campriani who won silver. Narang 29 is a Punjabi based in Hyderabad. He will also compete in the 50m rifle 30 position and prone events. Narang's win lifted the spirits of the Indian camp who were disappointed by the elimination of India's first ever individual Olympic titlist Bindra in the qualifying rounds.
Fasting Anna Hazare confident countrymen won't let him die in vain

Anna Hazare the 75 year old activist, joined three members of his team, Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and Gopal Rai, and began an indefinite fast after his ultimatum to the government to concede to his demands for a Lokpal Bill was ignored. Hazare and his fasting colleagues marched to Jantar Mantar in Delhi, where he addressed a gathering saying his team appealed to him not to fast but he will, adding till they get the Jan Lokpal, his countrymen will not allow him to die. He is only drinking water. Crowds of thousands of followers congregated at the venue in support. This is Hazare's fourth indefinite fast since last April. Team Anna has permission to fast at Jantar Mantar till August 8, the day Parliament's monsoon session is expected to begin.
