Olympics : Yogeshwar Dutt gets India a 5th medal

Despite a badly swollen eye, Yogeshwar Dutt fought three repechage bouts to win an Olympic bronze in the 60 kg category. He defeated North Korea's RI Jim. Dutt from Sonepat was jubilant because he had fulfilled his father's dying wish that he win a medal at the Olympics.
Cancer survivor Yuvraj to play for World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka

Cancer survivor Yuvraj Singh 30, has been named by India to play in the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka, four months after he was treated for a germ-cell tumour between his lungs. He was named to the 15-man squad for the tournament to be played from Sept 18 to Oct 7. Yuvraj who completed chemotherapy in the US in April, has not played competitive cricket since last November. He only recently began light training in Bangalore. Yuvraj who is delighted, tweeted that it seemed he was making his debut all over again. He said it is a huge honour and can't wait to step on the field and wave the flag of India.

Amitabh Bachchan tweeted that Mary Kom, winning an Olympic bronze medal for boxing was a great story. "A mother of two from Assam creates a moment of pride for India" was his actual comment. His geographic gaffe was not appreciated by northeasterners, including one from Shillong who said Bachchan should brush up on his geography and does not know where Mary comes from, chiding him for even more discrimination that the Northeast is subjected to from the mainland! The actor later apologised for his gaffe.
Delhi-Agra/Taj Mahal now in 2 hours on new expressway

An expressway linking Delhi with Agra, the home of the world famous Taj Mahal, has been opened, reducing the journey to the iconic tomb by half. The new road will help boost the numbers of tourists from all over the world who visit the monument to love. A single-day round trip to Agra using the new expressway will now cost just $9 in tolls.
Vice President Hamid Ansari elected for second term

UPA candidate Hamid Ansari was re-elected India's Vice President, defeating NDA nominee Jaswant Singh. Ansari polled 490 first preference votes out of 728 valid votes cast in the election. Jaswant Singh polled 238 votes. Ansari was backed by the Congress. Singh a BJP leader and former minister was backed by the NDA as well as the AIADMK. A career diplomat and scholar, Ansari 75, set a second term as VP by emerging a clear winner in a direct contest with veteran BJP leader Singh, a former finance, defence and foreign minister of the country.
