Abandoned mother sets fire to her own funeral pyre
Report dated 03/03/2013 @ 8:59 PM

Abandoned mother sets fire to her own funeral pyre M Sakuntala, 70, was suddenly left alone when her husband died in 2010. Their children convinced her to sell their family property and she moved to a rented house. The son and daughter apparently did not want to be with her and largely left her alone.

One day Sakuntala walked into a crematorium where she lay on a pyre and set herself ablaze using a bottle of kerosene to light the funeral pyre. The caretaker found her charred body on the pedestal and informed police who initially suspected someone may have tried to dispose of a body illegally.

Later inquiries found that the deceased was Sakuntala. Police sent her body to a government hospital and handed it over to her son after a postmortem.

Kerala girls suspended for drinking alcohol in school Three school girls from Kayamkulam, were found drinking alcohol in school during lunch break by some school mates, who alerted their teachers. The girls were duly suspended by the school administration.

The suspended students approached the high court asking that the court issue a direction allowing them to attend the annual examinations in progress.

The government representative informed the court that the government has no objection to allowing the girls to attend the final examinations, after which they may be dismissed with transfer certificates so they may be given admission in other schools.

The school authorities filed a petition at the high court challenging the decision.

Women beat nude abuser to death in Mumbai slum
Report dated 26/02/2013 @ 10:08 PM

Women beat nude abuser to death in Mumbai slum Four women beat Harish Jethwa, 35, to death after he came out of his home nude and hurled abuses at them, in a Ghatkopar slum. Jethwa suffered internal injuries and died the next morning. The assault was witnessed by several residents but no one came forward as a witness. Jethwa was a history-sheeter and on bad terms with his neighbours.

Police initially registered Jethwa's death as accidental but changed it to murder after receiving the post-mortem report. They are now investigating the matter and searching for the four unidentified women who were booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
