While exorcism is an old practice in some Indian villages, the Malajpur mela in Betul district near Bhopal sees thousands of visitors from Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, even Andhra Pradesh, for the month long 'bhoot pret ka mela' that will exorcise them and make their lives easier. One priest explained that exorcism is a centuries old practice there and each evening after prayers they treat those under the spell of ghosts and evil spirits. They hold one Guru Deoji sant samadhi who was a Rajput with supernatural powers, born in around 1700 AD. He did extraordinary miracles such as turning sand to sugar and restoring sight to the blind. Families of many believers say they have found the exorcisms effective but one clinical phsychologist says the psyche of the people assembled can be termed as hysterical and there are conventional treatments that can cure the problems of people believed to be possessed by evil spirits.
