Karnataka Judge says acceptable for men can beat their wives ! Women activists in Karnataka are demanding action against High Court Judge K Bhakthavatsala who said it was acceptable for a man to beat his wife, just as long as he took good care of her!

Activists have filed a complaint with the state's Chief Justice and launched an on line campaign, saying he should be impeached, and asking if he is trying to defend domestic violence. They say the Justice has made similar anti-women remarks in the past.

One senior High Court lawyer and former state assembly lawmaker Pramilla Nesargi said she was present in the court when the judge made the insensitive remark, and he should be transferred or restrained from hearing cases relating to women's issues.

Justice Bhakthavatsala for his part said his comments were twisted out of context and that he has always supported conciliation in failed marriages and has never defended the violence against women.

According to government statistics a minimum of 37% of women have suffered some form of physical abuse at the hands of their husbands.
