US NRI convicted for undisclosed HSBC accounts in India
Report dated 25/08/2012 @ 2:30 PM

Arvind Ahuja of Wisconsin has been convicted on federal tax charges for failing to disclose offshore bank accounts maintained in India and France, accounts he managed with the assistance of bankers who worked at an HSBC representative office in Delhi. Ahuja transferred millions of dollars from bank accounts in the US to undeclared accounts at HSBC India and HSBC in the bailiwick of Jersey, a British Crown dependency located off the coast of Normandy, France. These accounts earned over $2.7 million in interest income from 2005 to 2009. The Court said the case is a warning to individuals who think they can use offshore bank accounts to commit tax crimes. HSBC has been at the core of a US crackdown on persons who may be evading US taxes by using offshore accounts, particularly in India. US citizens and residents who have a financial account in a foreign country with assets in excess of $10,000 are required to disclose the existence of such an account in their individual income tax returns. Ahuja's sentencing has been scheduled for January 2013.

After seven years, Naresh Rani 33, the deserted wife of NRI Hussan Lal, was finally able to get an FIR registered against her husband and six of his family members, upon the direction of the Inspector General of Jalandhar. She alleged that the Superintendent of Police threatened her to compromise with her in-laws or drop their names from the FIR. Rani had earlier filed a case of domestic violence with a local court which ordered police to recover her dowry items. Then too police failed to comply with the instructions of the court. Rani married Hussan in 2004 and a few months later he began harassing her, then left for Italy. The in-laws started to abuse her physically and her many complaints to the police were ignored. A case has finally been registered and is being investigated with the help of a cabinet minister.
