Another sorry tale of wife abuse by US NRI husband
Report dated 05/03/2012 @ 8:00 PM

Kaveri Kapoor Parachar of Delhi was preparing for her MD exams when her parents decided to arrange a marriage to Kaling, an NRI medical practitioner in the US, in 2009. Soon after they moved to the US her new family took away her jewellery and started harassing her for dowry. Kaveri asked Kaling to let her work but he refused. He was cruel, and used to beat her. Her mother-in-law Lalita forced her to lick her feet, and when she got pregnant her husband beat her badly and asked her to abort the child. In 2010 she gave birth to a boy, but the beatings continued on a regular basis. She was not allowed to breastfeed the baby and was given drugs that showed up in her medical reports. Her passport was hidden and she was prevented from speaking to her parents. She had some friends in Michigan whom she confided in, who told her parents of their daughter's awful plight, and one day when the torture became unbearable, Kaveri ran away. She left for India with her two year old son. Her parents have approached the Tis Hazari court for justice. Such is the case with many women who are made to marry NRI grooms at the biding of their parents, only to end up miserable and destitute.
